Carla R. Michelotti
Carla Michelotti has a distinguished record of business leadership, international strategic marketing insight, and global legal expertise. As a “C” Suite executive Chief Legal, Government, & Corporate Affairs Officer, she helped multinational corporations anticipate and mitigate sensitive and significant challenges. She has been responsible for the strategy, management and successful defense of “bet the company” litigation and significant regulatory investigations, both domestically and internationally. Having had global legal responsibility for advertising and communications, she is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on all aspects of legal issues pertaining to marketing, branding, and advertising, including digital issues, intellectual property, privacy, complex litigation, and mergers and acquisitions. Carla is a recognized industry strategist having had an exceptional role in developing advocacy strategies and policies for the advertising industry around the world regarding commercial free speech; privacy; food and beverage advertising; intellectual property; digital issues; contracts; and advertising regulation. She has often been asked to speak about advertising regulation, privacy, the industry, and evolving global issues impacting marketing. At the birth of the Internet, Carla was first within the industry to identify the need to meet with the White House and key EU leadership to discuss Internet marketing legal issues, and she led those first key meetings. She also organized the first “global summits” of advertising self-regulators and industry leadership to address anticipated “cross-border” advertising international issues. Most recently, Carla has advocated on behalf of the advertising industry for the protection of intellectual property, for establishing privacy self-regulation, and has helped the entertainment industry to discourage copyright infringement. Ms. Michelotti has received numerous honors including induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame; receiving the Anti-Defamation League’s Women of Achievement Award; the American Advertising Federation Barton A. Cummings Gold Medal; the European Advertising Standards Alliance Best Practice Award; Chicago Advertising Federation Lifetime Achievement Silver Medal Award; International Advertising Association Medal of Achievement and the IAA “Champion” Award; the Justinian Bar Association Award of Excellence; the DePaul Outstanding Service to the Profession Award; the Girl Scout’s Tribute to Achievement Award. Carla was also named Chicago Catholic Lawyer of the Year, “Chicago Ad Woman of the Year”, and was listed in the “Today’s Chicago Woman Hall of Fame”. Ms. Michelotti currently sits on the Boards the Advertising Self-Regulatory Council; the European Advertising Standards Authority; the International Advertising Association; the American Advertising Federation; Athena International; Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana; Junior Achievement of Chicago and The House of the Good Shepherd. She is a Trustee of DePaul University; Vice-Chairman of the Marketing Committee of the U.S. Council for International Business; a Vice President of the International Advertising Association; and is a past Chairman of American Advertising Federation. Carla is an American Bar Fellow and a founding member of the Illinois Bar Fellows. She is an active member and past board member of The Economic Club of Chicago; The Chicago Network; Illinois Bar Foundation; and Illinois Equal Rights Foundation. She is a member of the American, Illinois, Chicago, and Justinian Bar Associations. Since retirement from Leo Burnett Worldwide, a communications company working with multinational clients in more than 80 countries, Carla “rebooted” and today is active in the industry providing strategic regulatory consulting addressing advertising and marketing challenges, including privacy and digital issues. Prior to Leo Burnett, Carla was an attorney with Jewel Companies, Inc. She has a B.A. in political science, a Juris Doctor, and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from DePaul University.
